The Center for Medicare Services (CMS) also uses a rating system to help patients and families make informed choices for care. CMS has stated, “the Five-Star Quality Rating System is to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and to help identify areas about which you may want to ask questions.” CMS features an overall rating system that gives each facility a rating of between 1 and 5 stars. Locations with 5 stars are considered to have above-average quality and 1-star ratings are below-average.
