About Our Community
This is the promise that the staff at Emeritus at Harbour Pointe Shores - and throughout Emeritus Senior Living communities - has shared since 1996, when our Ocean Shores assisted living and retirement community first opened its doors. It's a simple promise to be compassionate and kind, understanding and respectful - a promise to become extended family to the seniors entrusted in our care and to our residents who have chosen our retirement community for its active lifestyle.
The Perfect Location
Our lovely retirement community sits on the southern tip of Ocean Shores, a small peninsula community surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Grays Harbor. Many mornings, residents are greeted by spectacular sunrises over the bay.
Point Brown Avenue, the main route connecting Ocean Shores to Route 109, is just a couple of minutes away. Outdoor recreation is conveniently located, with Oyhut Wildlife Recreation Area just to our south, and a large golf course nearby. The Ocean Shores Interpretive Center, which residents love to visit, is within walking distance and provides a wealth of information on local history and wildlife. The Ocean Shores Convention Center, another popular destination, sponsors all kinds of events throughout the year, from arts and craft shows to our Winter Fanta-Sea celebration.
Every Monday and Friday, we take residents out to specialty shops, the movie theater, Damon Park, the Dollar Store, or places where they can run their shopping and banking errands. We also provide transportation to doctors’ offices in Aberdeen and Hoquiam, although many residents prefer the convenience of going to our family practitioner in town.
A Wonderful Selection
Our small, one-story community includes 50 senior apartments with three floor plan configurations, including an alcove studio layout. Each senior apartment includes a refrigerator and microwave and a very spacious private bathroom equipped with showers that have a seat, grab rails, a handheld shower head, and have a low lip for easy entry. The bathrooms also have grab rails around toilets and plenty of space to accommodate a wheelchair.
All our units have large windows, with apartments in the front of the building looking out onto a beautifully landscaped courtyard, and apartments in the back look at the water views of North Bay. Exterior studios on both ends of the building have peak-a-boo views of the water. Residents are able to furnish and decorate their apartment to make it their own. They can even have the walls painted a specific color; after all, it’s their apartment, and we want them to feel right at home! And for those residents who don’t want to live alone or who are on a fixed income, we also offer “friendship suites,” in which two residents share one apartment at a reduced cost, yet they still have access to all of our amenities and receive the same services.
When you enter our building, you see our cozy main living room first, with a gas fireplace and comfy couches and chairs for relaxing and visiting. A reading area on one side is separated by a divider wall from our TV area, which provides a large-screen TV. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in our Wii bowling league. There’s an activities table with arts and crafts always available. We also have our own popcorn machine and have “movie night” with hot homemade popcorn several evenings a week. Next to our living room is our spacious and bright dining room.
Strong, Caring Professional Relationships
Emeritus at Harbour Pointe Shores offers the services of occupational and physical therapists, who are available to see residents here on site. In fact, our therapists provide services right in the comfort and privacy of the resident’s apartment, up to five days a week depending on the resident’s individual needs.
Ocean Shores is also fortunate to now have its own family practitioner in town. Many of our residents are happy to have access to a local doctor, instead of having to travel to see their physician in Aberdeen, 25 miles away. The residents can also take advantage of the concierge doctor that comes in once a month.
For those residents who prefer to go to Aberdeen for their appointments, we do provide senior transportation services as frequently as possible. We can also arrange transportation should a resident need to be taken to an appointment beyond Aberdeen. Our resident care director also believes strongly in involving family members in the resident’s care and encourages their participation, not only in taking residents to appointments, but also in joining us for various activities and events.
Our Staff
Currently we have 29 staff members, including an executive director, a community relations director, business office director, maintenance director, dining services director, life enrichment director, resident care director who is a registered nurse (R.N.), another R.N. and a licensed practical nurse. We also have resident assistants who provide assistance with daily living, and medication technicians, who handle medication management.
We often get thank you notes from residents and their families. One of our letters came in the form of a poem, by Judy Ann, who says the poem is dedicated to all of the loving aids and staff at Harbour Pointe Shores:
“There's a place called Harbour Pointe Shores. It's a place many call home; some have families, others alone. Young and old, we all need their help, and in this place that's what they are all about! They make you feel wanted and loved and take care of your needs. It's a place where many call home, a special place where kindness is shown. At Harbour Pointe Shore's, you’re never alone!”
